Royal British Legion Scotland Ballater - Best Kept War Memorial 2013

Judging across the length and breadth of Scotland for the Annual Best kept War Memorial Competition was completed recently with Ballater winning the “Level 1 Very Highly Commended Category”. The category win by Ballater was an improvement on previous years not just because of the high quality on-going maintenance throughout the year but because of a pioneering innovation introduced this year unique to Ballater.

Ballater War Memorial

Through the ingenuity and metal working skills of local tradesmen, the memorial wreaths laid in memory of fallen service men and women last year during the Remembrance Service, have been kept in place through all weather conditions, by special holders designed to display the wreaths. Due to the success and networking facilities within the Legion a number of other Branches have expressed an interest in purchasing the wreath holders for their memorials.

This achievement was only made possible through the help and support of the Aberdeenshire Council staff and the voluntary work of two Legion members Hugh Inkster and Arthur Menzies. Their dedication and hard work has elevated the Ballater memorial to take a prominent and eye-catching place in the centre of the village.
