Royal Deeside : Surrounds and Environment

Images of Royal Deeside, Scotland
home page

Royal Deeside is the name given to the upper or western part of the valley of the River Dee. The river rises high in the Cairngorm mountains and flows through some of the most beautiful and restful scenery in Scotland before reaching the sea at Aberdeen. One hundred and fifty years ago Queen Victoria chose Balmoral and Deeside as her holiday centre, and successive generations of the Royal Family have followed her example. So too have generations of holiday makers, discovering for themselves the health-giving air, the majestic scenery of mountain and river. To these natural delights can be added many and varied sporting activities which appeal to today's visitors.

The scenery is amazingly varied. Braemar is surrounded by hills but at the other end of Royal Deeside, Drumoak is in fine farming countryside. The essence throughout is the unspoilt appearance. This is countryside as it 'ought to be'.

The weather is not what one can be led to believe from tales of Scottish rainfall. Unlike the west of Scotland, the rainfall here is very modest - on average some 34in (or 875mm) per annum. Temperatures, however, can be cooler than places further south, especially in the upper reaches around Braemar. Indeed, the lowest temperature recorded in UK was measured at Braemar. But such low temperatures explain why the surrounding hills are so popular with skiers.

In this section we introduce you to some of the enjoyment to be experienced on a visit to Royal Deeside.
